Do you have little time during the week and still want to eat healthy? Then go meal prep! With our busy lifestyle, meal prepping is really a godsend. By preparing your meals, you are less likely to be tempted to eat sweets or other unhealthy things. In addition, you save money and time… who wouldn't want that? Do you want to start meal prepping or could you use some extra tips? Then this article is perfect for you! Are you reading along?
What is meal prepping?
After a hard day's work, motivation is often hard to find to go to the supermarket and put a healthy homemade meal on the table. How nice is it if you already have a nice meal ready in the freezer or refrigerator? Meal prepping is ideal for these kinds of situations. But also when you exercise fanatically and you also keep a nutritional schedule.
By planning your meals in advance, you know exactly how many macros you are taking in. Macro tracking is very popular these days. Macronutrients (macros) provide your body with the energy needed for your daily activities.
Macros include: carbohydrates, proteins and fats. If you don't get the right amounts of these three, your body can't function properly. It is therefore important that you get the right macros. We will go into this in more detail with an article soon.
Benefits of meal prepping!
You are more aware
Not only do you buy more consciously, you also deal with food more consciously. By planning every meal of the week, you will make less impulsive purchases and less food will be wasted. This also saves you a lot of money and the environment! Who would not want that?
More time for the fun things
Meal prepping saves you a lot of time! It's like washing your clothes, you don't throw each piece of clothing separately in your washing machine. This is how you do it when preparing your meals. Whether you prepare two hundred grams of pasta or a kilo, it remains just as much work.
Often when you are tired or very busy and still have to go to the supermarket, things go wrong. You then choose unhealthy comfort food more quickly because you no longer feel like putting in the effort and then the pizza or ready-made meal from the supermarket looks very good. Meal prepping solves that problem. There is always tasty and healthy food in the house that you don't have to put in much effort. You heat it up and you're done!
How do you proceed?
Are you ready to meal prep? Then it is useful to work well prepared (prepare for preparing, yes really). Read below how you can best go about prepping.
1) Have a plan!
Meal prepping is impossible without a plan. In the first instance, look at how many days and which meals you want to prepare. Make a weekly menu and a shopping list. When you have mapped this out, you will see on which day you are going to prep the food. For example, choose to cook on Sundays. It may take some getting used to at first, but once you've gone a few weeks, you won't know any better.
2) Provide enough trays
Cups, bowls and more bowls. Yes, from now on tupperware containers are your best friend! Without the containers you cannot store the meals properly and make the right portions. You can store the meals in this way per daily portion in the refrigerator or freezer.
3) Start cooking
Obviously this is the part that takes the most time. So try to make something fun out of it. Put on your favorite music while cooking or get started with someone. To keep it easy on yourself, choose recipes that don't require a lot of ingredients or that you can combine with other recipes. Let the meals cool down before you put the lid on, otherwise you will get a lot of condensation and that will not make the food tastier.
4) Stay creative
The advantage of meal prepping is of course that you can prepare all your meals in one go, but this can also make it easier to get bored. Afraid that your meals will become boring and monotonous because of this? Then think about how you can use certain ingredients in different ways. For example, you can use chicken in a salad, but also combine it with broccoli and rice. Be a little creative, keep trying new recipes and try to add something unique to the meal every day without it becoming unhealthy.
Store the containers in the refrigerator (which you have set at a low temperature). Check which one you need for the first 3 days and keep it in the fridge. You can put the other containers in the freezer. You take this out the night before, for the next day.
